The specific objectives of the EUROMALVAC Consortium are to:
- Identify promising malaria vaccine candidates produced by European malaria research.
- Feed these selected candidates into a pipeline for vaccine development and testing in several European centres.
- Optimise and manufacture trial batches of these immunogens to GMP standards.
- Carry out preclinical and clinical testing of candidate vaccines with adjuvants suitable for subsequent clinical use in humans.
- Strengthen the links between European groups working on malaria vaccine research, development and production.
To achieve these goals, the EUROMALVAC consortium is:
- Coordinating and raising funding for the work of its 13 contributing malaria research groups.
- Carrying out a scientific work programme of research on lead vaccine candidates.
- Pooling the resources and expertise of each group in immunogen validation, vaccine design and synthesis, preclinical and clinical testing.
- Seeking to concentrate resources on the most promising vaccine candidates.
- Developing new contacts and collaborations as projects develop.
