Robert Sauerwein M.D. is Head of the Department of Parasitology at the Catholic University, Nijmegen. He has over 20 years of experience in the field of clinical microbiology and tropical medicine, including extensive experience in hospitals in the Caribbean and Africa. He has been a member of the European Union-funded VINCOMAL network and is currently a member of the Co-ordinating Committee of the African Malaria Vaccine Testing Network. Dr Sauerwein will supervise the Phase 1 human clinical trial at the University of Nijmegen. The Academic Hospital Nijmegen has the necessary clinical expertise, the culture facilities for both Plasmodia and mosquitoes and the experience in conducting clinical malaria vaccine trials to provide the foundation for the establishment of a European Centre for Clinical trials for malaria vaccines. This facility, unique in Europe, has been the leader in the continued production of Plasmodium-infected mosquitoes over the past decade, providing essential resource material to many collaborators. Members of the team have recently carried out experimental infections in human volunteers. University of Nijmegen is currently the only clinical facility in Europe where experimental P. falciparum challenges in humans can be carried out. Dr Sauerwein will collaborate with his colleague, Dr. Wejnand Eling, who has considerable experience in clinical and experimental malaria. Dr. Eling also has experience in the transmission of P. falciparum into mosquitoes for clinical use in humans. He directs the large-scale malaria culturing facility and insectaries within the specialised infectious diseases unit at Nijmegen University |
