Introduction

EUROMALVAC currently comprises 12 partners in 9 separate institutions in 6 European countries working in immunology, molecular biology and epidemiology, as well as vaccine production and testing.

The overall objective of the EUROMALVAC Consortium is to build up a pipeline of candidate malaria vaccines in various stages of research and development. The consortium works in collaboration with other scientific and industrial groups such as the European biotechnology industry and the European Malaria Vaccine Initiative.

The Consortium brings together individuals with state of the art expertise in areas as diverse as human malaria immuno-epidemiological field studies and X-ray crystallography to tackle vaccine development problems.

There is also considerable strength in in vitro and in vivo assays to define the important parameters of immune protection.

Following a 3.5 million grant from 1999 - 2003, the EUROMALVAC Consortium is at present funded through a second grant of 3.7 million Euro
from the European Commission through its Control of Infectious Diseases initiative
(Key Action 2).

This initiative forms part of the Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources programme, one of the four thematic programmes of the
Fifth Framework Programme (1998-2002).
